Multiple global records were broken last year, including greenhouse gas levels, air temperature, and sea surface temperature. One of the most devastating consequences of global warming is record-breaking rainfall, causing widespread flooding. In October 2024, such as an event occurred in the Valencia area of Spain, where one town was deluged by almost 500 millimeters of rain in just eight hours. The unprecedented downpour caused widespread flooding in southeast Spain, killing more than 200 people.

Scientists warn that most cities are totally unprepared for these extreme weather events caused by climate change. These disasters have another consequence: they disrupt the global food supply. In northwest Europe, hundreds of thousands of tons of potatoes were lost due to flooding. A recent study found that in 2024, one in eight children worldwide had been impacted by weather disasters, with hundreds of millions of youths missing school.

New research from Stanford University reveals emissions of the highly potent greenhouse gas are rising faster than ever before. “It’s troubling that emissions from all sources, cows, oil and gas wells, landfills keep going up. Human activities are now responsible for two-thirds of global methane emissions.”

Our Most Gracious Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan) frequently reminds us that the only way to halt global warming is through a worldwide shift to the vegan lifestyle. “The vegan diet will change the climate for the better. The vegan diet will stop global warming. The vegan diet will cut the methane gas, and methane gas is a driving force behind our climate acceleration. But methane will dissipate quickly from the atmosphere. Thus, the planet will cool quickly, instead of focusing on CO2, because CO2 will stay for long, long, long, long, hundreds of years in the atmosphere.”
