The best way I could describe it was this endless sense of euphoria where there was no time, there was no space, and most importantly, there were no limitations to how good I could possibly feel. American near-death experiencer Jacob Cooper shares how he suffocated at age three, crossed into Heaven, encountered angels and Christ consciousness, reviewed past lives, and chose to return.

Jacob was three years old in September 1993 when he climbed a playground slide while unknowingly suffering from whooping cough. As he reached the top, he began to suffocate. Oxygen deprivation shut his body down, and he entered a near-death state that he remembers with extraordinary clarity decades later. As his breathing failed, Jacob became conscious outside his physical body. What followed was a crossing into the spirit realm marked by heightened awareness, timeless peace, and encounters that extended far beyond a single lifetime.

My whole entire breath was going away, to where I had nothing to hold on to. I began to notice myself slowly suffocating, to where there was nothing I could do to stop the suffocation, and I was able to see my body in the disembodied state. It’s as if I had an X-ray scan over my entire physical body, with privyness and awareness of all the different functional components of it. But during this time, I was keenly aware of one part of my body — that was my brain. My brain literally snapped in half, and I heard a large crack within my brain. As the saying goes, my brain cracked open — and that’s when God and the spirit realm came in. I began to race down a tunnel at some insane speed — a familiar tunnel that I’ve seen many times before, not in this lifetime, but I know before this lifetime and many other times before this lifetime in other different lifetimes and incarnations.

The best way I could describe it was this endless sense of euphoria, where there was no time, there was no space, and most importantly, there were no limitations to how good I could possibly feel. I began (to have) an awareness of what I would like to refer to as the Palace of God. You could say Source — whatever your terminology is used to — but to me, this Palace was the highest point, or the highest pinnacle, of reality as I knew it. I was able to be aware of angels in this palace, and a beautiful light that I saw. It was almost too potent for me to look at. I became aware of a vibration, an energy, a feeling. I was able to see the consciousness of Christ Itself on the other side. In this moment, I was left with the feeling of all was well, will be well, and is well.

Jacob then became aware of his physical body and the people around it. Though unable to respond, he could perceive their thoughts and see their spiritual nature. I was able to feel a form of myself. I was able to know their thoughts and know what they were about. I became aware of dancing, fire-like auras around all the people around me. I was just amazed by how much is inside of us and all around us that we forget that indeed we are infinite spiritual beings at our core, having this human experience.

He next encountered what he calls his soul family— beings connected across many lifetimes— along with a vast gathering of angels radiating unconditional love. He was then asked whether he would stay or return. I became aware of what I call the spirit family, or the soul family. And as I saw my soul family members, I felt a feeling of embarrassment. And that was not their judgment. Their judgment was unconditional. It’s as if I told my spirit team and my soul family that I was going on this great mission, like I was a soldier going into war. Then moments later, I was discharged. I felt it was just too premature for me to leave this body — that there was more work to be done. I became aware of an endless array — or endless sea — of angels, as I call it that was floating right in front of me. Moments later, I was able to be posed a question from the angels and my guides in the spirit realm, which is, what will I do? Will I stay and continue my life on the other side and my work on the other side, or would I stay on this side and continue to finish my journey in this chapter of my life as Jacob?

He then saw future work he would do—speaking to others and helping them remember who they truly are. Despite the beauty of Heaven, he chose to return. I became aware of different people that I was speaking to — through groups, different lectures that I would be doing in this life. I thought to myself: a feeling of amazement at how beautiful the other side truly is. But as beautiful as it is, creating an awareness of Heaven on Earth might be even more profound. In this moment, I was able to connect to the eyes of the participants that I would be speaking to and the work that I would be doing. I said, “As beautiful as the other side is, I cannot say no to this window. I cannot say no to bring the hereafter to the here-now, in this life, to other people — to allow them to re-remember who they really are.”

Jacob awoke in a hospital after being rushed there by ambulance, knowing his life was forever changed and that consciousness exists beyond the brain. I know that the brain is not a producer of our life, but a filter between the two worlds.

Looking back, Jacob says surrender revealed eternal truth. How could I ever forget the profound love and warmth and healing on the other side? When I lost all of my breath in my body, I was able to surrender to the breath of eternity that we all have within us — the Divine spark. We indeed go on. We are eternal. Bless you.
